Announcement: The Truth Before Comfort Kickstarter is Now Live
Please pre-order and help fund my fifth book and first nonfiction book, Truth Before Comfort: Confessions of a Comic Book Journalist

Dear readers,
All too often, the world of comic book journalism and media criticism is bogged down by clickbait headlines, brand promotion and blind nostalgia. I aim to cut through that noise. I aim to bring you Truth Before Comfort.
My latest book, Truth Before Comfort: Confessions of a Comic Book Journalist, is finally available for pre-order on Kickstarter. The campaign will run until June 3. Please pre-order the book, either in physical or digital format, purchase other goodies, such as postcards and copies of other books, and help me bring this project to life.
Truth Before Comfort: Confessions of a Comic Book Journalist will be my fifth book and my first nonfiction work. My previous books were two poetry collections and two novels. Truth Before Comfort will collect most of my Substack articles and feature additional material in its chapters to support my underlying thesis. Truth Before Comfort will also include a Preface and an Afterword where I tie everything together and reflect on my philosophy as a journalist and media critic. And, it will have a Foreword by indie comic book writer Phil Falco, whom I wrote about in Three Comics to Read for Pride Month.
Jorge Santiago, Jr., the As the Moonlight Shines and American Bug cover artist, knocked it out of the park again with the Truth Before Comfort cover artwork. The book also has a cover logo by Winston Gambro, who previously made some last-minute design changes to the Massacre at the Comic Shop spine.
The Kickstarter will offer postcards featuring the Truth Before Comfort front cover artwork, Massacre at the Comic Shop bookmarks and the option to purchase my other books, Massacre at the Comic Shop, American Bug, Diesel Doctrine and the Temporarily Embarrassed Millionaires and As the Moonlight Shines. At one of the reward tiers, you can help me donate a copy of my poetry book American Bug to the Prison Book Project, a nonprofit organization that provides books to prisoners across the United States. There will also be a stretch goal for prints of the Jack Kirby portrait that Richard Pace drew to illustrate the poem “Comics Will Break Your Heart” in American Bug.
Again, you can find the Kickstarter for Truth Before Comfort: Confessions of a Comic Book Journalist Kickstarter here. I hope you can help me bring this project to life. Thank you.
In love and solidarity,
Nick Ulanowski
